After weeks of declines, U.S. Covid cases have stalled at a high level: ‘The ERs are packed’

After weeks of plunging U.S. Covid-19 cases, the decline in infections has stalled out.

New infections have dropped to an average of more than 74,000 per day over the past week, a 57% drop from the delta wave’s peak level of 172,500 new cases per day on Sept. 13.

Immunocompromised people may get less protection from mRNA vaccines: new study

COVID-19 vaccines worked fairly well in keeping immunocompromised patients out of the hospital from the infection, but still less than for those with a competent immune system, a study showed.

After two vaccine doses, immunocompromised patients saw 77% vaccine effectiveness (95% CI 74%-80%) against hospitalization for confirmed COVID-19, with a 3.9% rate of SARS-CoV-2 test positivity in hospital compared with 11.8% among those who were unvaccinated.

Children prevously infected with COVID-19 wil benefit from a vaccine --experts

A startling statistic emerged as advisers to the Food and Drug Administration debated use of the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine in ages 5 to 11 last week. According to one federal scientist, by June an estimated 42 percent of these children had already been infected with the coronavirus.

That figure was much higher than anyone expected. But the estimate, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, might have overstated the percentage of children who were infected, several experts said in interviews. Among other flaws, the percentage was based on tests known to have a high rate of “false positives” — signaling the presence of antibodies where there were none.
