OPINON Essay: As Pandemic Rages on, Some Optimism --NYT science writer srter

....Clearly, the pandemic has not ended. So far some 215,000 Americans have lost their lives to the coronavirus, and reliable estimates suggest that the number could reach 400,000. Health experts agree that, with stronger leadership, the death toll would have been far lower.

The Role of Traditional Ecological Knowledge in the Disaster Risk Management Strategies of Island Communities in Cat Hai, Vietnam

cddjournal.org - Hoang Thi Bich Hop  Nguyen Huu Ninh  Le Thi Thu Hien
Received: 30 October 2016 / Accepted: 27 June 2017/ Published online: 10 July 2017

Highlights

The residents of Cat Hai Island were able to preserve their traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) in predicting storms and floods.

Although TEK on storm and flood prediction was widely used by the residents, the knowledge was not integrated into the current disaster risk management (DRM) scheme of the island.

The DRM of the island can be improved by integrating relevant TEK.

Resilience in the SDGs: Developing an Indicator for Target 1.5 that is Fit for Purpose

We outline a comprehensive approach for developing a cross-sectoral, multi-dimensional and dynamic understanding of resilience. This underpins the core message of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that development is multi-faceted and the achievement of many of the individual development goals is dependent on the accomplishment of other goals. It also acknowledges that shocks and stresses can reverse years of development gains and efforts to eradicate poverty by 2030. Crucially, this approach to understanding resilience draws on data that countries will collect for the SDGs anyway and entails only a small additional burden in this regard.

Making Communities More Resilient to Climate-Induced Weather Disasters

submitted by Samuel Bendett

homelandsecuritynewswire.com - February 18, 2013

Mounting scientific evidence indicates climate change will lead to more frequent and intense extreme weather that affects larger areas and lasts longer. We can reduce the risk of weather-related disasters, however, with a variety of measures. Experts say that a good strategy should include a variety of actions such as communicating risk and transferring it through vehicles such as insurance, taking a multi-hazard management approach, linking local and global management, and taking an iterative approach as opposed to starting with a master plan.

encounter-thailand.com - November 1st, 2012 - Tom Fawthrop

If the climate change warnings aren’t yet loud enough, tune into what some of Vietnam’s leading environmental scientists are saying.

Vietnam is among the five countries most in peril as a result of rising sea levels and changing weather patterns, according to a 2009 report by the World Bank. The country’s long, thickly populated coastline and its reliance on fishing and related industries put Vietnam in the frontline of what many experts see as an impending battle for survival.

Reframing Resilience

First, there is great value in a systems approach as a heuristic for understanding interlocked social-ecological-technological processes, and in analysis across multiple scales. Yet we need to move beyond both systems as portrayed in resilience thinking, and the focus on actors in work on vulnerability, to analyse networks and relationships, as well as to attend to the diverse framings, narratives, imaginations and discourses that different actors bring to bear.
